The Truth Helps You - Book Excerpts
How to Avoid Horrible Experiences as a Result of Bad Decisions, Bad Situations or Bad Advisors
Throughout my years in business, I've known people whose lives have been virtually destroyed by bad advice or poor choices. I want to make sure that doesn't happen to you. I want to empower you so you don't end up like these people who could have changed their lives if they'd had the information you hold in your hands.
That being said, an even bigger issue looms; one that could mean the difference between your financial success and total devastation. If ignored, this matter could entice you to make decisions that are not in your best interest, and may also work against your goals for a healthy financial future. If you come away with only one thing after reading this book, be sure you have the following point indelibly etched into your mind: …
Now comes the time I wish I could avoid. Sad to say, because of low-integrity, self-serving people who call themselves advisors, I need to warn you about something that should not even be an issue. The fact is – this is the point in the planning process where you may discover you've been duped by an unethical person who pretended to have your best interest at heart. I know that duped is a bold word and I apologize for using it but you need the facts.
Warnings to Help You Protect Yourself Against Unethical or Dangerous Advisors
A qualified advisor recognizes that trying to force the same one or two products on everybody would not only be irresponsible; it could also be destructive.
Although the tendency is to trust any professional in an area we are unfamiliar with, be aware! This may not always be advisable. Stay tuned into the fact that when you're talking to a professional, their intentions may not be the best.
They're intentionally fear-based and once they have you where they want you, (scared out of your skin) they come to your rescue and toss you a life-line: the product they want you to buy!
Determine if what you're hearing is valid criticism. A confident advisor will be more concerned with telling you what he can do for you, and less with the other advisor's shortcomings.
Not only did the guy lie to Mary and cheat her, he tried to deceive me – to save his sale! And believe it or not, the guy actually gave me his real name, (which I knew) when he tried to convince me he was a family friend looking out for her. Wow!
Important ideas many advisors won’t share with you
The reason I mention this no charge to you stuff is because some advisors will tell you that there's no charge, but if nobody was getting paid, the cost of the product or the service would be less, which would mean higher returns to you, so yes indeed there is a cost to you and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Let’s backtrack to that confusing statement about looking for more money versus more returns. I’m going to show you how actually earning less sometimes can get you more in the end. Even if this doesn’t make sense at first, hang in here with me. Remember, one bite at a time...
if an individual is only licensed with one or two insurance companies, I’m not going to say he’s bad and I am not going to say don’t use him but just be aware that no matter what your needs and goals and no matter what the possible solutions might be, he would only have one or two places to go to take care of them. There are hundreds of different companies with many different solutions. Should you be limited to only one or even just a few of those? I would say no.
Tips and Strategies to Identify and Select a Qualified Advisor
Will The Real Advisor Please Stand Up!
Don't assume because someone is visible, that they're good. Just because someone is doing retirement planning seminars or financial planning seminars doesn’t mean they're more qualified than anybody else, or that they're even looking out for your best interest. Do your homework.
Remember: not everybody in this business is the right person for you. My goal is to make sure you can get through the financial planning process successfully the first time. If I can help you to weed out some of the less likely places you'll find what you're looking for, that'll increase the likelihood that you'll find it. There's one sure-fire way to help you hone in on a group of qualified advisors to choose from.
